ThalesNano today announced a big step forward in the evolution of flow chemistry with the independent publication of results that prove that flow chemistry can match microwave chemistry in terms of speed, but with the ability to scale up in one continuous process.
The scientific paper, written by Prof. Oliver Kappe’s group at the University of Graz and published in Chemistry: A European Journal, details how the X-Cube Flash™ is able to match reaction time, conversion, and selectivity results with microwave in an important synthetic process: a Mizoroki-Heck cross coupling. The reaction may be then scaled up by either running the reaction in continuous mode until the desired amount of compound has been made or by using larger loop sizes and flow rates to increase throughput.
“Our aim was to solve this major industry process issue and these results prove that we have begun to achieve our goal”, said Richard Jones, Director of Product Management at ThalesNano. “Our users now have the possibility to scale up difficult reactions very quickly and effectively and synthesize hundreds of grams of material a day by implementing this new capability.”

The X-Cube Flash™ is a high temperature, high pressure continuous flow reactor, developed by ThalesNano Inc. to perform homogeneous organic synthesis. The X-Cube Flash™ is capable of 350°C and 200 bar. The system uses ThalesNano’s patented precise and quick temperature adjustment technology. Chemists can access new chemical space by working safely and conveniently at temperatures and pressures that were not easily accessible before in standard laboratories.
