Development of a Continuous Flow Synthesis of Ezogabine: Process Optimization and Scale-Up (Payne et al., 2025)

Organic Process Research & Development

This study published by BIOVECTRA and Xenon Pharmaceuticals illustrates how continuous flow hydrogenation technology can reduce the process and manufacturing mass intensity compared to batch methods. The research team synthesized Ezogabine – an antiepileptic agent used for the treatment of partial seizures – using a Raney-Nickel catalyst in the Phoenix Flow Reactor system. This method allowed for significantly shorter reaction times (under 2 seconds) and reduced PMI (26), ultimately contributing to cost reductions and adopting green processes.

Hydrogenation of Quinolines and Aldehydes Catalyzed by a Pyrolyzed, Augmented Cobalt-Salen Complex (Topf et al., 2025)

ACS Omega

Researchers from the Johannes Kepler University and the Leibniz Institute for Catalysis at the University of Rostock describe a new, low-cost heterogeneous catalyst based on an enlarged salcomine-type cobalt complex, for efficiently hydrogenating quinolines and aldehydes into 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines and primary alcohols respectively. The catalyst was tested under batch conditions in steel autoclaves, and ThalesNano’s H-Cube® Mini Plus flow reactor, which generates hydrogen gas on demand through water electrolysis, contributing to reaction safety.

Chemo-Enzymatic Cascades for the Sustainable Transformation of Canola Oil into Hydrocarbon Fuels (de Souza et al., 2025)

RSC Sustainability

A group of scientists from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro showcased a chemo-enzymatic cascade process converting canola oil into fuel-like hydrocarbons by combining enzymatic hydrolysis with continuous flow catalytic hydrogenation using an H-Cube® Mini Plus with a Pd/C catalyst, and a final enzymatic photodecarboxylation step – using the PhotoCube – to produce alkanes suitable for low-oxygen-content biofuels. By utilizing the safety and precision of ThalesNano reactors, this study offers a more sustainable route for the valorization of vegetable oils, ultimately contributing to the advancement of green technologies.
