ThalesNano Granted US Patent Approval for Its Flagship H-Cube® Flow Hydrogenation System

BUDAPEST, HUNGARY, PRINCETON, NJ and LONDON–( September 14, 2010) – ThalesNano today reported that the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted a patent for its industry leading H-Cube®, including several aspects of its proprietary underlying technology.

The H-Cube® is a revolutionary flow hydrogenation system developed for use by the pharmaceutical, fine chemical, petrochemical, biotechnology and related industries. The H-Cube® enables safe, fast and cost-efficient hydrogenation with superior yields when compared to conventional methods.

Ferenc Darvas, President and Chairman of ThalesNano, initiator of the H-Cube®, project and one of the inventors of the H-Cube®, said, “We are delighted that the USPTO has granted us full patent approval for the H-Cube®. Since launching the instrument in 2004, it has won the R&D 100 Award and has become a standard research tool, with more than 500 units sold worldwide. It is also very satisfying to receive patent recognition for this disruptive technology.”

“This is important news for ThalesNano and the H-Cube®,” according to Laszlo Urge, CEO of ThalesNano. “Our technology is in 28 countries worldwide, but the United States remains our biggest market, so gaining the legal protection afforded by a US patent is extremely important. We will of course continue to pursue patent protection for the H-Cube® in other geographies.”

ThalesNano and University of Texas Developed Pioneering Undergraduate Hydrogenation Course Now Available to Schools Worldwide

June 2nd 2010: BUDAPEST, HUNGARY and PRINCETON, NJ and ARLINGTON, TX
ThalesNano and the O’Brien Group at the University of Texas at Arlington today announced the completion of their collaboration to develop a safe, scientifically interesting course to re-introduce hydrogenation to teaching labs worldwide.

The course is designed to be completed using ThalesNano’s H-Cube® and H-Cube Tutor® flow hydrogenation systems, which eliminate the dangers of handling hydrogen and pyrophoric catalysts — the main reasons that hydrogenation reactions are no longer a part of most undergraduate lab syllabuses.

Initially available in English and Mandarin Chinese, the course makes available both multimedia and traditional course materials to allow educators worldwide to introduce the principles of hydrogenation and then direct students to carry out several industrially commonplace hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis reactions as part of a regular lab class.

Professor Chris O’Brien of the University of Texas at Arlington commented: “At UTA, we have long hoped to teach the technique of hydrogenation in our undergraduate labs, but for safety reasons we have been unable to do this. Thanks to the H-Cube, postgraduate and undergraduate students have routinely been able to carry out hydrogenations for several years. Based on this multiyear experience, we were able to deliver a formal hydrogenation course that we believe can be easily adopted at other schools. It is exciting to see more H-Cubes being utilized in an educational context, and it is fair to say that graduates with practical experience of hydrogenation will have a head start when applying for jobs in industry.”

“ThalesNano have always recognized the importance of academia in helping to establish innovative technologies as new industry standards,” added Dr. Laszlo Urge, CEO of ThalesNano, Inc. “This initiative is expected to be of enormous interest to educators as the H-Cube® family of products will allow them not only to reintroduce hydrogenation to the teaching lab, but also to give their students practical experience of flow chemistry — currently the fastest growing trend in industrial synthetic chemistry.”

The course materials, including multimedia training videos, a presentation, and lab notebook, are free to download at the following site: http://www.thalesnano.com/services/hydrogenation-class.

METTLER TOLEDO and ThalesNano Combine Technologies, Bring Real-time Reaction Monitoring to Flow Synthesis

May 17th 2010: Columbus, OH: Budapest, Hungary; Princeton, NJ
ThalesNano and METTLER TOLEDO (NYSE: MTD), the leading companies in their respective fields, today announced a collaboration to combine their existing technologies to offer flow reactor technology with real time reaction monitoring for faster reaction optimization and improved continuous process production.

This customer-driven collaboration will result in the integration of ThalesNano’s entire flow reactor line with METTLER TOLEDO’s ReactIR® Flow Cell system to take flow chemistry beyond where it is today.

The pairing of ThalesNano’s best in class flow reactor technology with the market leading reaction analysis system, ReactIRTM will allow chemists to observe what is happening in their reaction in real time and modify reaction parameters “on the fly” to improve yield or selectivity within minutes. The combined systems can also be applied to reactions where toxic/dangerous intermediates may be generated. Inline reaction monitoring can notify the user whether all the intermediate has been reacted to make these reactions safer for chemists.

The integrated system can also be applied to large scale synthesis: when integrated with the H-Cube Midi or H-Cube Maxi, process or production chemists may monitor catalyst activity during the reaction and change to a fresh catalyst bed when conversion drops below an acceptable level due to catalyst poisoning. This will ensure high purity product, avoiding the expense of unnecessary purification.

The strategic relationship allows the two market leading companies in this field to combine to support the further development of one of the fastest growing areas in chemistry.

“We are very excited to work with METTLER TOLEDO, the world leader in the process monitoring field, to make this revolutionary hybrid technology available to both of our customer bases.” said Laszlo Urge, CEO of ThalesNano. “The two flow-based technologies are so complimentary that minimal integration efforts are needed to combine them, meaning that current ReactIR users or ThalesNano customers may take advantage of this new application with virtually no system downtime: ThalesNano customers can get immediate access to online analytics and METTLER TOLEDO customers are provided with an easy way to start exploiting the benefits of flow chemistry.”

“By focusing on providing a complete solution, the two companies will jointly identify and develop a robust, cost effective offering to meet the developing needs of our customers.” Said Henry Dubina, President of Mettler-Toledo AutoChem, Inc. “Continuous chemistry has emerged as an important tool in the development and manufacturing of chemical based processes. ReactIR®, our in-situ FTIR spectroscopy system, has been established as a critical technique to allow the scientist to quickly and accurately determine steady state dispersion characteristics, reactive intermediates, reaction initiation and identify process upsets. The combination of these two technologies should result in even higher yields, reduced purities and significant time and cost savings for our users.”

ThalesNano Launches QuantiFlow™, A Revolutionary Proprietary Gas Flow Meter

April 30th 2010, Budapest, Hungary, London UK, Princeton NJ, : – ThalesNano is proud to announce the launch of a new form of proprietary gas meter called QuantiFlow®. The QuantiFlow® system was developed in a research collaboration with MOL (Budapest Stock Exchange: MOL), the leading integrated oil and gas company in Central & Eastern Europe.

The system was designed to overcome the shortcomings of gas flow meters currently on the market: unlike other gas meters, QuantiFlow®is not dependant on gas composition and so is ideal for measuring the flow of gas after gas liquid separation where gas composition may change over time. In addition, gas or gas mixtures of any density may be accurately measured.

QuantiFlow® is reliable, simple to calibrate, and requires little or no maintenance. The system is perfect for laboratories in the chemical, food, and petrochemical industries where experiments may be conducted over several weeks or months.

Originally developed as part of ThalesNano’s P-Cube® and H-Cube Maxi® reactors, the QuantiFlow® has been made available for sale separately due to customer feedback that it makes substantial advances over current gas flow meter technology and has a market as a standalone product..
